Gender Equality in Education Project (GEEP)
The Mid-Term Review of the CEF in 2005 indicated an urgent need to mainstream gender across the programme, in project and partner assessment, in budget work and in looking at the exclusion of girls as it cuts across other categories of exclusion. This requires moving beyond a focus on equal numbers of girls and boys enrolling in school (parity of access) to looking at equality and quality of the educational experience and learning outcomes. The CEF is committed to encouraging national coalitions to link with the women’s movement, and to looking at gender dimensions in its own practice.

The Gender Equality in Education Project (GEEP) is a two year project of capacity building for gender equality in the CEF, its work and its outcomes. The project began in September 2006. For more information please contact:

Equals Newsletter
The CEF guest-edited the April 2007 issue of the Beyond Access Project's Equals Newsletter. This issue (no. 19) explores some of the ways in which civil society organisations are working to ensure that gender is mainstreamed through their own work, and in national and local education plans and budgets. Feature articles look at the work that the GEEP is doing to strengthen national level advocacy around gender equality in education, and explore the use of budget monitoring to ensure that financing for education is spent in a way that is gender-equitable.
